Hagley Road West closed after pedestrian killed in crash
A pedestrian has died after a crash involving a truck on a busy road in Quinton.
Emergency services were called the collision at the junction of Ridgeway Avenue and Hagley Road West at around 6.15am today.
The pedestrian, a man aged 45, died at the scene.
The driver, a 24-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently in custody.
West Midlands Police urged drivers to avoid the area where possible as the road heading out of Birmingham city centre was closed off.
It opened at around 11.30am.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "We have launched an investigation into the circumstances of this collision.
“I would ask anyone who saw what happened and hasn’t already spoken to us, to contact me or my team as soon as possible.
“A man has sadly lost his life, his family have been informed and our specialist officers will provide support to them.
“If you saw anything or have dashcam footage please contact us.”
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said an ambulance crew, a paramedic officer and a specialist trauma doctor were sent to the scene.
The spokesman added: "Crews arrived to discover a man, who was the pedestrian, with multiple serious injuries following the collision.
“Ambulance staff performed specialist trauma care and administered advanced life support at the scene.
“However, despite their best efforts, it sadly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.
“The van driver, a man, was uninjured in the incident.”
