Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to Dudley Road at around 1.30pm yesterday after the black Mercedes veered off the road.

The car suffered significant front-end damage and completely destroyed the barriers in the crash.

A man, aged in his 60s, was taken to hospital with his injuries, but they're not believed to be serious.

Shaz Saleem, owner of Express Taxis who are based on the same street, was the first on the scene to help the man.

Thee 33-year-old told the Express & Star: "I was in my office and I heard a massive bang outside and it was just standstill.

"I rang the police and fire service straight away but then I noticed liquid coming from the car and a lot of smoke.

"The man was really shaken, he didn't know what happened, he was shocked.

"I managed to help him get out the car and get him to the path and calmed him down.

"It was quite alarming and shocking, but thankfully his injuries weren't too bad.

"It was unbelievable, you don't expect anything like this to happen, but the main thing is that he was ok.

"The emergency services were at the scene quickly so thank you to them for the making the car and lamppost safe."

Police officers were on the scene to manage traffic as firefighters made the scene safe and paramedics treated the driver.

A West Midlands Ambulance service spokesman said: "We were called at 1.33pm to a man in his 60s who had collided his car with barriers and a lamppost.

"He was treated at the scene and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for further assessment, but his injuries are not believed to be too serious."
