Man fighting for life after being rescued from Halesowen canal
A drowning man who had to be pulled from a Black Country canal by passers-by was today fighting for his life in hospital.
The man fell into the water along a canal towpath near The Lighthouse pub in Coombs Road, Halesowen.
Members of the public came to his aid and pulled him out on Sunday before West Midlands Ambulance Service arrived at the scene at 4.46pm as the air ambulance also landed nearby.
A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports of a man in the water.
“We administered advanced life support and took the patient to Queen Elizabeth by land ambulance in a serious condition.
“We were told by the caller that passers-by had rescued the patient out of the water.”
“We sent one ambulance, a paramedic officer, a Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford and a Hazardous Area Response Team.”
Police are now appealing for information over the incident which happened on a stretch of the Dudley Canal.
The man was spotted by a member of the public close to the entrance of Gorsty Hill tunnel.
Inspector Lee Evans from Brierley Hill response team, said: “We are trying to find out who this man is and how he came to be in the water.
“At this stage, there does not appear to be any obvious suspicious circumstances.
“We are appealing to anyone who can help us to identify him.”
He is a white, middle-aged man, with receding, swept back greying brown hair and sideburns.
He was found wearing a red T-shirt, black jeans, a black leather jacket and black ankle boots.
Inspector Evans added: “If you recognise this description, please give us a call.”
