Scheme bringing Coseley youth to life

Young people in Coseley are being given the chance to take ownership of local youth services by creating and running their own groups.

This eight-week programme, called Run Your Own, trains youngsters over eight sessions on how to run events, activities, clubs and market them in their area.

There are no limits on the activities that can be created, from a women's football team, to a rave, or a music session, and at the end of the training sessions those taking part will know how to bring their ideas to life.

It is a paid opportunity by creative company, Beatfreeks, who run a number of youth-focused projects in the Black Country and Birmingham.

Sipho Eric Ndlovu, consultant at Beatfreeks, said: "Run Your Own will see young people working together on ideas they come up with to make their local community better and more exciting, with more for them to do.

"The participants will benefit from meeting other young people who want to make things happen in their area.

"They'll learn new transferable skills such as how to see an idea through from start to finish, including developing teamwork skills and budgeting and more. The eight week programme is flexible, to make sure that it is relevant.

"Our idea is that by the end of the programme young people will feel confident to run youth activities in their area."

The scheme is being backed by the community, including East Coseley Big Local, and participants will have the support of staff to help them achieve their visions.

Young people aged between 14 and 25-years-old living in Coseley are invited to take part and no prior experience in events management is needed.

Sessions will run weekly on Wednesdays from 5.30 to 7.30pm at Rainbow Street Community Centre starting on February 26 to April 29.
