National championship for Brierley Hill boxer
A teenage boxer from the Black Country has fought his way to a national championship.
Connor Young from Brierley Hill became English National Champion after a weekend of competition at the finals in Birtley, near Gateshead.
The 6ft 7ins 16-year-old, representing Old Hill Boxing Club, won his semi-final and final by unanimous decision to become Male Youth Cadet Under 86kg champion.
It marks a significant rise up the ranks of Boxing by Connor, who only began boxing two years ago and was a finalist in the over 80kg category at the 2019 England Boxing National Development Championships.
His dad John, who was a keen amateur when he was younger, spoke of his immense pride at Connor's success.
He said: "I'm over the moon at what Connor has done so far.
"My dream was for him to win a national championship, which he's done, and then go on to get an England vest in the future.
"Three weeks ago, England wanted him to come up for trials at Sheffield, so when he gets the chance to go up, he'll hopefully get in the team."
John was quick to praise Connor's coaches at Old Hill Boxing Club for all the work they've done to help his son get to this stage.
He said: "His coaches have done so much for him and really gone out their way to make him better.
"The Head Coach Ernie Lock has worked hard to train him and Gavin Robinson has taken him to gyms all around Birmingham for sparring, so they've done so much for him.
"Both men are fantastic and supportive and I'd like to thank them and Old Hill Boxing Club for their wonderful support of Connor."
