The cash-strapped authority has been carrying out a review of its entertainment venues as it looks to make savings of £37 million over the next three years.

Councillor Paul Bradley, deputy leader of Dudley Council, said no decision had been made.

But the Express & Star understands that closure of the halls is an option that is being considered as the council seeks to stave off the threat of insolvency.

Sources say that officers have been investigating how money could be saved through the possible closure of the two venues, and that a report will be presented to councillors - either at a meeting of the council called to take place on December 18, or at the following one on January 25.

One council source, who declined to be named, said that the plan was to turn Dudley Town Hall into the main focus for entertainment in the borough.

Another added: "Our understanding is both Stourbridge Town Hall and Halesowen Town Hall included on a list of different options for possible closure, and a report will be presented to the council either this month or next."

Councillor Pete Lowe, leader of the opposition Labour group on the council, said he would vigorously oppose any attempts to close the venues.

"Because of the budgetary situation, we have got concerns that the council will attempt to sell off or close a number of our entertainment venues," he said.

"We would oppose the closure of any of our town halls, as well as any of our leisure centres."

Councillor Bradley said: “No decision has been made on the future of Stourbridge and Halesowen town halls.

"The council is currently working to identify potential groups to take over the running of the two venues and while this takes place, shows can continue to be booked."
