Dudley Council has invited people to sign the Royal Family's book of condolences, while the Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Claire Darke offered her condolences.

Kevin O’Keefe, chief executive at Dudley Council, said: "It was with great sadness that we heard of the Duke’s passing on Friday and our thoughts and prayers remain with the Royal family.

"Like many people across the country, we understand residents would like to pay their respects to the Duke and send their condolences.

"The safest way for people to do this is to sign the national online book of condolence and observe the minute’s silence at home on Saturday."

The Union flag will continue to fly at half-mast on Dudley Council buildings as a mark of respect, until Sunday morning - the day after the Duke's funeral.

Wolverhampton Council has also opened a book of condolences, which can be found here.

Sympathy

Wolverhampton Mayor, Councillor Claire Darke, said: "As mayor, on behalf of our city, I wish to convey deepest sympathy and condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family. Our thoughts are with them at this sad time following the death of His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness Prince Philip was a great character who brought warmth and strength to his role of consort.

"Significantly his work to develop the Duke of Edinburgh Awards to support young people in Britain and across the world, it has given opportunities to many young people in Wolverhampton.

"The loss of your life partner is very personal, and our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen.

"Many people have experience loss recently and we need to take time to grieve and time to heal.

"Many of us can connect with how the Her Majesty the Queen must feel at this moment."

The Duke’s funeral will be held at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle, at 3pm on Saturday.

The event will be televised and there will be a national minute's silence at 3pm.

Wolves' game in the Premier League with Sheffield United, which was scheduled to take place at 3pm on Saturday, has now been rescheduled to 8.15pm, in order to avoid clashing with the funeral.
