Smoke was seen billowing into the air from the former Metro Bar in Trindle Road.

It is not yet known how the fire started.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said 13 firefighters were called just after 10am today.

He added: "It was a 999 call reporting a fire. We had three vehicles respond, two fire engines and a brigade response vehicle.

"The first message they sent back said it is a derelict building with smoke coming from the first and ground floors.

"Crews gained access using an axe and door entry equipment and used a hose reel jet to tackle the fire.

"The fire was in the ground floor bar area that has also broken through to the first floor as there were floor boards missing.

"Once they extinguished the fire they used thermal imaging cameras to check there were no hotspots.

"Crews made the building temporarily secure."
