Photos show new Dudley Leisure Centre taking shape
New photos show the new Dudley Leisure Centre building taking shape – as work will continue during the second lockdown.
The new £18.2 million facility is rising from the ground in Flood Street.
Work on the next phases of the centre started at the end of May, after initial enabling work continued during the first coronavirus lockdown.
Constitution Hill had been closed for two weeks up to Friday, November 6, to enable the use of a large mobile crane to add further steel to the structure of the leisure centre.
The new facility will include a 25-metre swimming pool, teaching pool, four-court sports hall, 100-station gym and fitness suite, exercise studios, soft play area and cafe.
Leisure centres in Stourbridge and Halesowen will also be refurbished as part of the council’s multi-million pound plans.
Councillor Ian Kettle, Dudley Council's cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise, said: “As residents will no doubt notice when they pass it, work is progressing nicely on the new leisure centre site.
“I can confirm it will continue during the second lockdown, with Covid-19 safe working practices in place.
“We are on track to open to the public in early 2022.”
Construction should have started in April 2019 but the project was delayed when planners were ordered to “enhance” the initial designs, with the new aim to have the facility built ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2022.
