The cockerels were out the box on a grassed area in Dudley when RSPCA inspectors arrived

RSPCA inspector Vicki Taylor was called to a grassy area off Eves Lane in Dudley on April 25, where she discovered the birds near a cardboard box.

She rescued the five birds and they are now receiving treatment for mites.

Ms Taylor said: "It appears the birds were crammed into a cardboard box and left by the side of the road.

“When I attended the box was laying beside the fence and the cockerels were loose in the grass.

“I managed to round them up and took them for a check-up.

"The poor things were covered in mites which they are now receiving treatment for."

She added: “The birds will stay in our care while they are being treated and if no one comes forward to claim them then we will start the search for new homes.”

The RSPCA inspectors are now appealing for witnesses and are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the birds being abandoned, or have any information about where they came from.

Anyone with information should call the charity's inspector appeal line on 0300 1234 999.
