How nurse sculpture has become new landmark on Cinder Bank island
A steel sculpture of a nurse has been installed at an island in Dudley to help show solidarity with frontline workers.
Liam Harris, who works at family-run Colstan Profile Ltd, thought up the idea during his spare time at work.
The piece has has now taken pride-of-place on Cinder Bank island and has been widely praised online.
Mr Harris, 29, who lives nearby, was helped by his brother Steve at the Peartree Lane steel profiling business to make the piece using computer-aided design software.
He said: "We drew up the image on our CAD system and I edited in the stethoscope details so it would look real.
"I got one of the lads to cut it on the laser machine and painted it – then it was complete.
"We're only down the road from Cinder Bank and at the time I was placing it there there was some police officers coming down the road.
"I think they were going to say something about us doing it, but they saw what it was and told me to carry on.
"It's been shared all over Facebook now.
"The council has trimmed the grass there and they've left them alone, which is a nice gesture."
The process took 40 minutes to draw up on the system and around five minutes to cut it out.
And now Mr Harris hopes many NHS workers who use the route will be able to see it everyday.
Mr Harris said: "I've put it on Facebook so people can see it and numerous people have seen it.
"It's been on numerous pages – I haven't seen the total number of views because it's constantly being shared."
"If I come up with another idea I might," he added.
"I just thought it was a nice gesture for us to do – I hope it puts a smile on all our front line workers' faces."
