The authority’s enforcement officers and police have made 150 compliance visits to shops and companies since the Government ordered the closure of restaurants, pubs, nightclubs and leisure centres in March.

But Dudley Council bosses have emphasised most businesses in the town are complying with the law.

Councillor Nicolas Barlow, cabinet member responsible for trading standards, said: “At this time, while most are looking out for others in their community, sadly a small minority are looking to profit.

“Unfortunately we have seen an increase in recent weeks of people trying to take advantage of the outbreak, targeting people and businesses who may be feeling vulnerable or are struggling.”

The council revealed it received 59 reports of businesses continuing to trade, issued 19 warnings of which 17 were to licenced premises and served a prohibition notice on a vape shop which has since closed its doors.

Councillor Barlow added: “While we have received 59 complaints about businesses continuing to trade when they should be closed, there does now appear to be a high level of compliance, with very few further ongoing complaints or reports being received.

“I would urge people to be cautious, not to buy at the door and if they’re concerned they’ve been visited by scammers to report this to Dudley Council’s scams unit by calling 01384 818871.

“Can I please remind everyone once again of the importance of following government instructions, staying home as much as possible to help save lives and protect our NHS.”
