The women were both given specialist treatment at the scene, say West Midlands Ambulance Service.

They were taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital major trauma centre by road.

The doctor from the air ambulance and a critical care paramedic travelled with the patients to help continue treatment en-route to hospital.

An ambulance service spokesman said both women were in a serious condition.

The driver of the van, a man, was assessed and did not need hospital treatment at that time, said the spokesman.

Motorists were warned to find alternative routes and avoid the area where possible.

The road junction had reopened by around 4pm but the slip road from the A4123 New Birmingham Road onto A461 Birmingham Road towards Dudley Zoo and Castle remained closed.

West Midlands Police said the van driver stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries. The van belonged to cash security firm Loomis.

Sgt Dean Caswell, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at West Midlands Police, said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation and I would appeal to anyone who saw what happened or anyone with dash cam footage to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

"Birmingham Road at the junction of Birmingham New Road is likely to remain closed for some time so please avoid the area and we thank you for your patience.”
