£150k pledge 'won't cover pitch problems'

A £150,000 funding pledge will not cover all the drainage problems at football pitches across Dudley, it has been claimed.

It comes after Dudley Council said it will invest the funds in upgrading tired and poor standard pitches and changing rooms at parks over three years.

But Bob Hickman from the Stourbridge and District Youth League has said he "can't see that going very far".

And that more of the games over the last three weeks have been called off rather than played due to the poor weather.

Bob, who is also secretary for Halas Hawks junior teams which play on the site, said: "The pitches do need a lot of work.

"I know a certain amount is being put to one side but I can't see it going very far.

"The pitches are very poorly drained, and with the weather we've had over the last few weeks so many matches have had to be postponed.

"It creates absolute chaos rearranging fixtures and referees, it's hard.

"In other places drainage has been improved but it doesn't appear to have been done very well, at the end of the day they're wasting money.

"They did it in Huntingtree Park, it's very poor, it hasn't been done well enough.

"It's very disappointing for the players, we've had more matches postponed in the last three weeks than we've had games.

"And some of the grounds are not very level. We don't expect completely level playing fields but some are very poor."
