Ryan Passey murder: Metal detector call after Stourbridge club stabbing
Metal detectors must be considered for all nightclubs after a man was stabbed to death in the Black Country, a senior councillor has said.
Ryan Passey, 24, was knifed in Chicago's in Stourbridge in the early hours of Sunday.
Now Stourbridge councillor and Dudley Council cabinet member Nicolas Barlow has said rolling out detectors and scanners nationally should be looked at.
He suggested it should be up to the Government to take responsibility for providing funding for equipment he feels is needed to help stamp out knife crimes in clubs.
Mr Passey died in hospital after being stabbed in the chest at the bar on High Street.
His death comes five years after Tom Kirwan was killed outside the Uberra nightclub, the former Canal Club, in Wolverhampton.
Councillor Barlow said: "There does need to be something put in place, whether door staff have some sort of wand or there are mobile scanning devices.
"Some schools in this country have these type of devices and it may well be something we explore, with support of the Home Office.
"People want to go out to bars and nightclubs and we have got to make these places as safe as possible."
Some nightclubs are fitted with metal detectors, mainly in busy city centres, but many others are not.
Councillor Barlow added: "I think there does need to be a review of licensing and the scope of council committees in terms of safety. It's something that needs to be taken up with the Local Government Association."
Chicago's will stay shut for the next two weeks after licensing bosses and nightclub managers agreed its licence should be suspended.
A full licence review is scheduled for August 24 to decide the venue's future.
Forensic teams spent Sunday at the club following the shocking killing. Mr Passey was stabbed at around 1am and died later in hospital.
Kobe Murray, 19, of The Broadway, Dudley, has been charged with murdering Mr Passey.
