Man, 60, dies in severe blaze at Birmingham flat
A man has died in a severe blaze at a flat in Birmingham.
Emergency services were called to a fire on the 11th storey of Trident House, in Granville Square in the city centre, shortly before 6pm on Tuesday.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics and fire crews, the 60-year-old man died at the scene.
Thirty firefighters tackled the "severe" blaze at the 20-storey tower block, using breathing apparatus and a hose reel.
A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman said: "At 5.42pm on Tuesday, December 1, we responded to a 999 call reporting a fire in a flat on the 11th floor of the 20-storey Trident House in Granville Square, Birmingham.
"Four crews and around 20 firefighters initially responded, with the first arriving in under four minutes. Our total response included six crews which equates to 30 firefighters.
"They were met with a severe fire in one flat and one man was unaccounted for. Firefighters began firefighting and a rapid search activity and quickly located a man, rescuing him from the property and worked hard to save his life by administering CPR.
"His care was subsequently handed over to the paramedics, but very sadly he died at the scene.
"Our fire investigators are working to establish the cause of the fire, with liaison of West Midlands Police."
A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We were called by the fire service at 5.52pm on Tuesday to reports of a flat fire off Granville Street in Birmingham. Two paramedic officers, an ambulance, HART paramedics, a critical care paramedic and the West Midlands CARE team medics were sent to the scene.
"Sadly, nothing could be done to save one man in the property and he was confirmed deceased on scene."
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We were called to a flat fire on Granville Square in Birmingham just before 6pm on Tuesday, where one man sadly lost his life.
"The death of the 60-year-old is not being treated as suspicious and will be referred to the coroner."
