Officers caught the incident on film as they raised a home in Serpentine Road, Birmingham.

Police believe the safe full of cash – which was sent crashing down the roof of his home – is linked to a drugs supply gang.

Officers have since recovered the safe, which fell onto the ground-floor extension of the property shattering several roof tiles, and seized the cash.

Inspector Sharon Revitt from the force's Gangs Unit, said: "Unfortunately for the suspect, not only has he lost nearly £27,000 but also left himself with a repair bill for the roof of his extension.

"He will have to prove the money has been accrued legally and not through crime.

"If he can’t we’ll keep it and look to permanently seize it under the Proceeds of Crime Act and put it towards community projects or crime prevention schemes.

"This warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act was prompted by community intelligence that the property was linked to drugs supply.

"We really value information from the public in our fight against the scourge of drugs and associated crime: the information is always taken seriously and we’ll look to act to catch offenders and make communities safer."

The raid was carried out at around 6am today on the back of intelligence, the force said.

The 23-year-old man was arrested at the property on suspicion of money laundering and remains in police custody for questioning.
