A total of 10 firefighters were sent to Bournville Lane at the company's world famous Bournville home after a 999 call.

Two fire engines, from Kings Norton and Bournbrook, arrived within three minutes after the call at 2.15pm earlier today.

The leak is believed to be have been caused by a mechanical digger which ruptured a gas man, a spokesman West Midlands Fire Service said.

Firefighters are currently assessing the damage and putting together a "plan of action" with gas engineers and on-site staff.

A spokeswoman for Modelez International, the company which owns the Cadbury site, said: "During routine work at our Bournville site, a third party operator damaged a gas pipe.

"The fire service and gas board are in attendance at the site to coordinate the repair and make sure the area is safe.

"As a precaution and on the advice of the emergency services, we have sent home some staff who were located in areas of the site that are in close proximity to the incident."

The leak is expected to be "fully resolved" by tomorrow, the spokeswoman added.
