Man dies after being found by walker in canal by Aldridge Road
A man has died after he was found in a canal in Great Barr this morning.
His body was found by a walker at around 7.30am in the waterway off Aldridge Road.
Paramedics arrived to find the man in critical condition but he died at the scene near the Aldridge Road Allotments.
Police are treating the death as unexplained and the man is yet to be identified.
A small cordon remained in place at 12pm while emergency services examined the scene.
A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "The body of a man was found in the canal off Aldridge Road in Great Barr this morning.
"Officers were called by a walker who spotted the body just before 7.30am.
"The man is yet to be identified and the death is currently being treated as unexplained."
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a patient in the water off Aldridge Road, Great Barr, Birmingham shortly after 7.30am this morning.
"Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a Critical Care Car from the Midlands Air Ambulance attended. Crews arrived to find a man in a critical condition and are still on scene currently.
"Sadly, despite the best efforts of ambulance staff nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead on scene a short time later."
A West Midlands Fire Service spokesman added: "We were called by police to what was initially described as a water rescue."
