Power cut across Birmingham hits Bullring, New Street station and homes

Power supplies across Birmingham city centre were cut causing disruption to shoppers and rail commuters.

The blackout affected stores in the Bullring and Grand Central shopping centres at around 10.40am.

New Street station was also hit by the outage along with homes and businesses.

Western Power Disruption, which manages electrical supplies, said power was back on to 9,600 properties by around 1pm.

A spokesperson said: "Our apologies for the delay and any inconvenience caused."

Officials at the Bullring and Grand Central said power was partially restored after 12pm but individual shops and restaurants may experience problems through the afternoon.

A statement online said: "Due to the city-wide blackout in Birmingham today, Bullring & Grand Central experienced a loss of power.

"The power has been partially restored to Bullring and Grand Central however some stores and restaurants are still affected. Power is expected to be restored later today."

British Transport Police tweeted to confirm the loss of power inside New Street Station and said trains were running as normal. It was sending officers are on patrol for some extra reassurance.

Many people took to social media to express their frustration that some stores are no longer serving and the station was partly in darkness due to the lack of electricity.
