Driver jailed after smashing into pedestrian in Birmingham and causing life-changing injuries
A driver who ploughed into a pedestrian while travelling on the wrong side of the road has been jailed and banned from driving.
Amer Hussain left his elderly victim with serious head injuries after hitting him along Alum Rock Road, Birmingham, on May 12 last year.
Hussain had been trying to overtake slow moving traffic on the busy route when he struck Mohammed Gulistan Khan in his Toyota Land Cruiser.
The victim, now 67, has been left with life-changing brain injuries and reduced mobility down his one side as a result of the crash.
Hussain, 32, of Station Road, Stechford, admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Birmingham Crown Court.
He was sentenced to 14 months in prison and banned from the road for two years and seven months last Tuesday.
DC Claire Byrne, from the force’s collision investigation unit, said: "This is a very busy road and such driving is completely unacceptable.
"Hussain showed no regard for others and ended up hitting a pedestrian who would not have expected a car to be travelling in that direction.
"Hopefully he will now reflect on the consequences of his actions as everyone has paid the price for this behaviour; Hussain with his freedom and Mr Khan and his family from the injuries he sustained."
In a statement Mr Khan’s family said: "The actions of this individual has had a life changing effect on our father and the rest of the family.
"We feel that the authorities should be given more power to help clamp down on dangerous driving.
"We feel the sentence awarded should have been more severe for this crime but now accept the punishment handed out.
"We would like to thank the police and the staff at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for the support provided to us in these difficult times."
