Hundreds of people gathered outside a building in the centre of Birmingham's Brindleyplace after a 'burning smell' in an office.
Eight firefighters were called to the Lloyds Bank offices inside Two Brindleyplace at around 2.40pm.
West Midlands Fire Service received a 999 call with crews from Ladywood station sent to investigate.
Crews found the smell led them to a fan extraction unit in the ceiling above floor two of the seven-storey building.
Spokesman Neil Spencer said there had been reports of a 'burning smell'.
People gathered in the courtyard at the centre of the bustling business and leisure complex while firefighters entered the offices.
The fire was out by 3.20pm.
