It is the biggest day in the region’s calendar – and there was a show of force from across the Black Country yesterday as people showed their love for the region and celebrated all it represents.

The flag even travelled across the globe, with regional businessman Ninder Johal unfurling it at a gig with his band Achanak in a Malaysian forest last night.

Closer to home, events were held across the Black Country, including a variety night at Great Bridge Library and golf tournament at Dudley Golf Club.

Since launching in 2012, the day – and wider Black Country Festival – has gone from strength to strength.

Festival organiser Steve Edwards said this year’s event was ‘bigger and better’ than ever – and he was delighted with people’s response to Black Country Day.

Mr Edwards told the Express & Star: “It was a great day and I was rushing here, there and everywhere.

“The whole festival has got massive – it’s bigger and better this year than ever before.

“It was nice to see the West Midlands mayor, Andy Street, turn up to one of our events and be part of it.

“It shows we’re reaching people we need to in the high places now as well.

“The turnout has been brilliant with people flying their flags but also the social media reaction.

“I am starting to understand how big it is but it’s still a bit of a surprise to see how much support there is out there.”

Mr Edwards said the event was first organised to bring communities together and celebrate the region – and he was delighted by people’s pride and passion for it.

The flag was shown off by businesses, celebrities and also soldiers from the region.

And it was even flown at Worcester Cathedral, according to the Bishop of Dudley.

Bishop Graham Usher wrote on Twitter: “A very happy #BlackCountryDay to everyone in the Dudley part of @CofEWorcester. Have a bostin Black Country Day!” In honour of #BlackCountryDay and the contribution the people of Dudley make to @CofEWorcester , @WorcCathedral is flying Black Country flag.”

One of the stars who showed their support for Black Country Day was Beverley Knight, who wrote on Twitter: “Proud Black Country woman, me! Happy Black Country Day.” Suzi Perry said: “So happy #BlackCountryDay –sending love to all those in my stomping ground.”

Meera Syal said: “Proud to have been brought up in the golden triangle of Essington-Bloxwich-Walsall. Have a bosting day! #BlackCountryDay.”
