Public health bosses in the borough said vaccination remains the best defence against the pandemic and are encouraging parents to get their children jabbed during the summer holidays.

They are also bracing themselves for what the autumn and winter months will bring later in the year.

According to latest figures, there were 608 positive cases recorded in the seven days up to July 10. This represented a 4.6 per cent increase on the previous week and takes Walsall’s total case number to 96,296.

The current rate in Walsall is 221 per 100,000 population, which is still lower than the national rate of 309.4 per population.

There were two Covid-related deaths in the week up to July 10, taking the overall total to 1,101.

Stephen Gunther, Walsall’s Director of Public Health said: “We continue to see a weekly increase in the number of positive cases in Walsall.

“As part of the government’s living safely with Covid-19 plan, there are simple measures we can take to reduce the spread of respiratory viruses.

“This includes wearing a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you may come into contact with other people you do not normally meet.

“Other measures include letting in fresh air, staying at home if you feel unwell, regular hand washing and vaccination.

“These measures remain the same and we would advise everyone to continue following them to keep themselves and their loved ones safe, including those who are most vulnerable.”

He added: “With Covid rates increasing again, we still need to do all we can to protect ourselves and others.

“Vaccination remains our best defence against the virus, reducing the risk of becoming seriously ill if we catch Covid.

“Whether you are due your first, second or booster dose, please do come forward to get vaccinated.

“We also encourage parents to make the most of the summer holiday opportunity to have their children vaccinated at a time that suits them.

“It is particularly important for any Year 6 pupils moving to secondary school in September to be vaccinated, have the best protection and reduce the chance of taking time off if they become unwell with Covid. Appointments can be booked on the NHS website or by calling 119.

“While we are enjoying the summer weather, we are looking ahead to autumn and winter. We are uncertain of what this will bring in terms of another wave of Covid. By continuing to follow simple measures, we can make a difference in reducing the risk of catching and spreading the virus.”
