13 more Covid deaths across Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

Thirteen more coronavirus deaths have been confirmed in the Black Country, Staffordshire and Birmingham.

Eight hospital deaths were announced on Monday, meaning 7,494 people have now died with the virus in the region's hospitals.

Meanwhile five more Covid deaths were announced in Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire care homes, taking the total to 1,385.

The UK-wide death toll, which only includes deaths within 28 days of a positive test, increased by 112 to 126,284.

And the latest vaccination figures show 28,327,873 people in the UK have now had their first jab, with 2,363,684 of these receiving a second dose.

Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire care home deaths

Two of the region's new care home deaths were in Dudley, one was in Walsall, one in Staffordshire and one in Birmingham.

The care home deaths were confirmed in a weekly update from the Office for National Statistics.

According to the ONS, the number of coronavirus care home deaths in each of the region's boroughs is as follows:

  • Dudley -150

  • Sandwell - 103

  • Walsall - 157

  • Wolverhampton - 159

  • Staffordshire - 500

  • Birmingham - 316

However care home deaths were not recorded for the first month of the pandemic last year, meaning the full total is likely to be higher.

Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire hospital deaths

One death was announced at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, taking the total to 1,156.

Two deaths were confirmed at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross Hospital, where the death toll is now 795.

Three new deaths were announced at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the total rose to 726.

One death was confirmed at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs Stoke and Stafford hospitals, where the total rose to 1,366.

And one death was recorded at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth Hospital as well as Heartlands, Solihull and Good Hope hospitals, where the death toll reached 2,576.

No further deaths were reported at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, where the death toll stands at 714.

Elsewhere in the region, two new care home deaths and one more hospital death were reported in Worcestershire. It means 857 Covid patients have died in the county's hospitals and 385 have died in care homes.
