Further 49 coronavirus deaths at region's hospitals

A further 49 coronavirus patients have died in hospitals in the Black Country, Staffordshire and Birmingham.

It means the total number of Covid-19 patients who have died in the region's hospitals now stands at 6,796.

A further 1,267 have died in the region's care homes.

In figures announced by NHS England on Thursday, a further 494 patients died in the country's hospitals, taking the total to 77,745.

Twelve deaths were reported at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where the death toll now stands at 1,015.

Six deaths were confirmed at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs the main hospitals in Stafford and Stoke, six deaths were announced, taking the toll to 1,267.

Five deaths were recorded at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the death toll increased to 653.

Four deaths were announced at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, taking the toll at Walsall Manor hospital to 638.

Three deaths were reported at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross Hospital, where the total now stands at 725.

Conditions

Nineteen deaths were confirmed at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs hospitals in the city including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where the toll now stands at 2,347.

Elsewhere, one death was recorded at the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 494 people, who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 77,745.

"Patients were aged between 27 and 103 years old. All except 22 – aged 51 to 87 years old – had known underlying health conditions.

"Date of death ranges from December 23 to February 10, with the majority being on or after February 6.

"Their families have been informed."

Meanwhile, 11,901,827 coronavirus vaccinations have been carried out across the country to date – including first and second doses.

In the Midlands, 2,182,085 first doses of the coronavirus vaccine has been administered, while 71,778 second doses have been carried out.

The data includes vaccinations carried out between December 8 and February 10.
