37 more Covid deaths in Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire hospitals

A further 37 coronavirus patients have died in hospitals in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

The deaths announced on Thursday mean a total of 6,439 patients have died in the region's hospitals.

A further 1,189 have died with the virus in the region's care homes.

In figures announced by NHS England on Thursday, a further 630 coronavirus patients died in the country's hospitals, taking the total to 74,249.

Seventeen deaths were recorded at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where the death toll now stands at 959.

Four deaths were announced at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs the main hospitals in Stafford and Stoke, where there has now been 1,222 deaths.

Three deaths were confirmed at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross Hospital, where the death toll is 690.

Thirteen deaths were recorded at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs hospitals in the city including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where the death toll increased to 2,218,

No new deaths were announced at either the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, or the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital. The death toll at Walsall remains at 598 since the pandemic began, while a total of 603 deaths have been confirmed by the Dudley trust.

Elsewhere, 13 new deaths were confirmed in Worcestershire – 12 at the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and one at the Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 630 people, who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 74,249.

"Patients were aged between seven and 102 years old. All except 30 – aged 40 to 99 years old – had known underlying health conditions.

"Date of death ranges from January 4 to February 3, with the majority being on or after January 29.

"Their families have been informed."
