Another 73 coronavirus deaths at hospitals across Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

A further 73 coronavirus patients have died in hospitals across the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

It means a total of 5,541 have now died in the region's hospitals after contracting the virus. A further 1,005 have died in the region's care homes after testing positive for coronavirus.

NHS England announced a further 1,027 hospital deaths on Wednesday, taking the death toll in the country's hospital to 63,322.

Thirteen deaths were announced at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where 790 people have now died.

A further 13 deaths were confirmed at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, where the total stands at 571.

Twelve deaths were recorded at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, where the total is 504.

Six deaths were announced at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital, taking the coronavirus death toll there to 1,096.

Two deaths were confirmed at the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, where the total is now 56.

One death was recorded at the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation NHS Trust, where the total increased to 49.

And 26 deaths were announced at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs across Birmingham including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, meaning the total now stands at 1,930.

No new deaths were confirmed at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the death toll remains at 512.

Elsewhere, a further 22 deaths were recorded at the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

A spokesman from NHS England said: "A further 1,027 people, who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 63,322.

"Patients were aged between 29 and 101 years old. All except 49 – aged 37 to 99 years old – had known underlying health conditions.

"Date of death ranges from December 14, to January 19, with the majority being on or after January 12.

"Their families have been informed."
