St Dominic’s Grammar School in Brewood made plans to set up the centre to test children returning to school after the Christmas break before the third national lockdown was announced on Monday.

The school changed its sports hall into a testing centre – with nearly 200 coronavirus tests available to be administered on Tuesday.

Among staff being tested on Tuesday was head of PE Laura Leigh.

Headmaster Peter McNabb said: “Clearly things are changing very quickly and we are keeping parents informed regarding home learning arrangements.

“In the meantime, all staff are being regularly tested to ensure that children of key workers who are attending school are kept safe.

“We are now well-versed in remote teaching and are confident that pupils, parents and staff will rise to the challenge and embrace their learning with the same spirit as last year.”

Originally, bosses at the school had said doing the testing the day before the new term was due to start gave the school the best chance of avoiding having to send year groups home in the senior school.

But it was announced on Monday by Boris Johnson that schools would close until at least February half-term as part of the lockdown, with a return to remote learning.
