16 more coronavirus deaths in Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire

A further 16 coronavirus patients have died in hospitals in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

It means a total of 4,479 people have now died in the region’s hospitals after contracting the virus, figures released on Boxing Day show.

On top of this, 875 people have died in care homes across the Black Country, Staffordshire and Birmingham since the pandemic began.

Three more deaths were confirmed at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, on Christmas Eve. It means 650 coronavirus patients have now died at the trust.

Four deaths were announced at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, where the total stands at 435. One death was confirmed on December 23 whilst three deaths were recorded on Christmas Eve.

A further seven deaths were recorded at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals, where the total now stands at 1,579. The deaths were recorded on Christmas Eve.

Two deaths were announced at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, where the total stands at 415. Both deaths were recorded on Christmas Eve.

Across England a further 161 deaths were announced by the NHS, with 32 of these in the Midlands. It brings the total number of confirmed deaths in hospitals in England to 48,311.

As of Friday the UK-wide death toll stood at 70,195 after 570 more deaths were announced on Christmas Day.

A spokesman for the NHS said: "Patients were aged between 44 and 100 years old. All except eight aged 64 to 94 years old had known underlying health conditions. Their families have been informed."
