Temple tour to give community support
An MP has visited places of worship to see Covid safety measures in place.
Jane Stevenson, MP for Wolverhampton North East, visited the Guru Nanak Satsang Gurdwara on Cannock Road, where she met with committee members and toured the gurdwara to see what they have done to prevent the transmission of coronavirus.
The gurdwara has been supporting the local community throughout the pandemic by providing food parcels.
During the lockdown in November, places of worship were required to close, with only individual private prayer being permitted. Ms Stevenson co-signed a letter from a cross-party group of MPs calling for places of worship to be reopened in the run-up to Christmas.
She has also visited Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Catholic Church in Fallings Park since it reopened, and was impressed with their safety measures too.
Ms Stevenson said: “I was acutely aware of how difficult it was for many people in Wolverhampton when places of worship had to close during the November lockdown. That is why I, along with many other MPs, urged the Government to allow them to reopen once the lockdown ended.
“I’m pleased the Government listened and allowed places of worship to reopen, particularly as this time of year is so important for people of all faiths. I have visited churches and gurdwaras across the constituency this month, to see for myself the excellent safety measures they have put in place.
“I would like to thank everyone at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour and Guru Nanak Satsang Gurdwara for allowing me to visit. The gurdwara has been supporting the local community throughout the pandemic with food parcels, and it was great to be able to thank them in person.”
