The city council has not yet disclosed the locations, but they will run alongside two existing facilities at the Civic Centre and the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Sedgley Street.

Asked about the uptake in people using the lateral flow test centres, John Denley, the director of public health for Wolverhampton, said: "There has been an absolutely great uptake.

"The Gurdwara was a pilot that we ran with the Department of Health and Social Care.

More Covid-19 coverage:

"That was the first [community-led site] in the country. We were able to learn about how best to roll this out with communities.

"The first thing we wanted to do was build a hub. The hub is our Civic Centre but we are really quickly building up that capacity within communities.

"We have got another five sites opening in the next week. Then we are going to build from that again.

"Last week, all told together, we did about 3,500, 4,000 lateral flow tests.

"If you think how that starts to build up, it just shows it is really acceptable to communities.

"And it is good when it is delivered within communities, with communities, as opposed to being imposed."
