Coronavirus death toll rises by 30 in region's hospitals and by 24 in care homes

A further 30 patients have died with coronavirus in hospitals across the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire, plus 24 people in care homes across the region.

The deaths announced on Tuesday mean 3,970 people have now died in the region's hospitals after contracting Covid-19.

A further 24 people have died with coronavirus in care homes across the region in the last week. Seven of those were in Staffordshire, six in Wolverhampton, three in Walsall, three in Sandwell, three in Birmingham and two in Dudley.

A total of 824 have now died with the virus in the region's care homes.

In England, the NHS on Tuesday recorded 325 new deaths in hospitals, bringing the death toll in the country's hospitals to 42,904. It included 59 in the Midlands region.

Nine more deaths were announced at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs County Hospital in Stafford and Royal Stoke University Hospital, taking the coronavirus death toll there to 688.

Five deaths were recorded at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Walsall Manor Hospital, bringing the total there to 381.

Another three deaths were announced at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, where the total number of deaths rose to 396.

Three deaths were confirmed at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where the death toll now stands at 593.

One death was confirmed at the Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, where the number of deaths rose to 30.

And nine deaths were announced at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals, where the total now stands at 1,424.

No new deaths were announced at the Dudley NHS Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the death toll remains at 388.

Elsewhere, two deaths were announced at the Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 325 people, who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 42,904.

"Patients were aged between 42 and 101 years old. All except 12 – aged 56 to 93 years old – had known underlying health conditions.

"Date of death ranges from November 5, to December 7, with the majority being on or after December 4.

"Their families have been informed."
