20 more Covid deaths in Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire hospitals

A further 20 coronavirus deaths have been confirmed at hospitals in the Black Country, Birmingham and Staffordshire.

The deaths, announced by the NHS on Sunday, mean 2,834 have now died with Covid-19 in the region's hospitals since the pandemic began.

At least 717 people have also died with the virus in the region's care homes.

A further 137 patients died in hospitals across England in figures announced on Sunday, taking the country's hospital death toll to 32,992. It included 40 patients in the Midlands region.

Meanwhile the official UK-wide death toll, which includes deaths in and out of hospital within 28 days of a positive test, increased by 162 to 46,717.

Five patients were confirmed to have died at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Foundation Trust, and which runs Stafford County and Stoke Royal hospitals, bringing the trust’s total to 403.

A further four patients died at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Russells Hall Hospital, where the total is now 290.

Three further deaths were confirmed at the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where the total increased to 429.

One patient died at the Royal Wolverhampton Trust, which runs New Cross and Cannock Chase hospitals, where the total of deaths now stands at 309.

The first death at the Midlands Partnership NHS Trust was confirmed on Sunday since June 28, taking the total there to 13.

And six patients were confirmed to have died at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals, where the total rose to 1,082.

No new deaths were confirmed at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, which runs Manor Hospital, where the total remains 247.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 137 people, who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 32,992.

"Patients were aged between 45 and 103 years old. All except five – aged 45 to 81 – had known underlying health conditions.

"Date of death ranges from October 18 to October 31.

"Their families have been informed."
