MP calls on Government to allow pubs to use additional space when they reopen
An MP in the Black Country has called for pubs to use outdoor space when they reopen as lockdown restrictions are eased.
Jane Stevenson said pubs were the "pillar" of the community across Wolverhampton and needed to open as soon as possible – but safely.
And she stressed to Government chiefs the possibility of pubs using outdoor space – including using pavements – to ensure social distancing.
Ms Stevenson, who represents Wolverhampton North East, said: "Pubs are the pillar of communities across Wolverhampton, and during the coronavirus outbreak many of them have adapted to offer takeaway services as well as provide support to our vulnerable and elderly residents.
"But I know many people have missed being able to enjoy a pint with friends at their local. It is only right that as we gradually ease lockdown restrictions, we should explore every option to allow our pubs and restaurants to reopen.
"The UK’s hospitality sector has been hit particularly hard by this crisis, so I am asking the Government to look at whether the use of additional outdoors spaces would allow our local pubs to reopen more quickly and in a safe way that prevents the spread of coronavirus."
It comes as the city MP tabled a question in Parliament to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, asking what assessment they have made of pubs using outdoor space.
Government chiefs are set to be urgently working on a plan to allow pubs to reopen – with planning restrictions potentially eased to allow them to expand their outdoor space.
Reports suggested some ministers wanted to reopen pubs and restaurants by June 22, but a spokesman for Number 10 has dismissed it.
Government chiefs insist they are working towards early July as the potential reopening date for the sector in England – with pubs and restaurants reopening when it is safe.
