The NHS figures announced on Monday mean the Covid-19 death toll in the region's hospital is now at 2,202.

The number of deaths in hospitals in England increased by 122 to 24,739, in the latest figures.

More Covid-19 coverage:

Among the new hospital deaths announced on Monday were three at the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust, which runs Stafford's County Hospital and Royal Stoke University Hospital, taking the death toll to 270.

Two more patients were announced to have died at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, running New Cross and Cannock Chase Hospital, taking the total to 258.

No new deaths were announced at the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust, operating Russells Hall Hospital, where the total remains 237, or at the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust, in charge of Manor Hospital, where the total is 192.

There were also no deaths reported at the Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, which runs Sandwell General and City hospitals, where the total remains 329.

A further five people have died at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, taking the total to 863. The trust runs Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.

No new deaths were reported in Worcestershire on Monday, where the total death toll in the county's hospitals remains at 234.

As well as including patients who tested positive for the disease, the hospital statistics now also include patients who died in hospital and hadn't tested positive but for whom Covid-19 is documented as a direct or underlying cause of death on their death certificate.

This included one death in the Midlands – but it not known where in the Midlands the death took place.

A spokesman for NHS England said: "A further 122 people, who tested positive for coronavirus (Covid-19) have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 24,739.

"Patients were aged between 47 and 100 years old. Of those, seven of the 122 patients – aged between 50 and 85 years old – had no known underlying health condition.

"Their families have been informed."

The daily figures include Covid-19 patients whose deaths were confirmed in the previous 24 hours, not who died in that period.

Some deaths are not included in the statistics for several days due to testing or family members being informed. Monday's figures included patients who died between May 13 and May 17.
