Dave Garbett, who works at Baxter College, completed his 12-hour cycle marathon on his turbo trainer, smashing his £200 target to raise money to buy food for families struggling during lockdown.

The head of department at the Habberley Road school said he was 'overwhelmed' by the support from staff and students, both former and current, and friends and family.

Mr Garbett said: “I’m really grateful that, given the current situation, people are able to support this and really see the benefit in what we are trying to do to support our community.”

He pedalled a total of 253 kilometres during the 12-hour marathon and raised a total of £1,156.

Mr Garbett added: “Mentally, I found the challenge more difficult, as being in isolation in the garden was tough.

“Although I had family to support me during the day - supplying me with drinks, snacks and plenty of words of encouragement - I missed the conversation with others.

“I really appreciated the texts and video calls from other PE staff during the day, which kept me going.”

Baxter College principal Matthew Carpenter said: “We are immensely proud of Mr Garbett for undertaking this challenge and very grateful to all those who supported him. We are a close community and this money will provide much-need sustenance to a lot of our families who are facing hardship.”

The school is part of the Severn Academies Educational Trust.
