Change in law allows crematorium grounds in Stafford to reopen
The burial grounds at the crematorium in Stafford have been reopened following a change in the law.
People will now be able to pay their respects to loved ones at the town’s Tixall Road site but are being asked to observe the ongoing social distancing measures in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Earlier this month, Councillor Jonathan Price, cabinet member for environment at the borough council, had asked for clarity after the Government introduced legislation which led to crematoriums across the country being closed – while cemeteries could stay open.
The Government has now changed the law to say the legislation does not apply to the burial grounds or Garden of Remembrance surrounding a crematorium – which means the Stafford site can reopen.

Councillor Price said: “I am very pleased people will be able to access the grounds of the crematorium to pay their respects and share quiet moments with lost loved ones.
“This has been a terribly tough time and it was heartbreaking to hear stories of those who wanted to visit graves but were unable to. Many difficult decisions are being made during these challenging times and I am really glad we now have the clarity on this that I have been calling for.”
The cemeteries at Eccleshall Road in Stafford, and in Stone, are still open.
Councillor Price stressed that social distancing measures must continue, with people asked to keep two metres away from those not in the same household.
