The Commonwealth Gold winner, who is a patron of the hospice, urged people to do their bit and take on the 2.6 Challenge.

It comes as Compton Care launched an urgent appeal for donations amid a decline – with fundraising events cancelled due to the virus.

And members of the Wolverhampton Racing Cycling Club will also be taking part to do their bit.

Mr Porter said: "I hope everybody – kids, parents, everyone – will agree to ride 2.6 miles, or 26 miles, to help Compton Care out.

"I support it all wholeheartedly, not only for the exercise and the health benefits, it's a way of trying to raise money.

"Sadly the charitable events can't take place and it's left a massive hole for Compton Care and other charities.

"Hopefully lots of kids will ride a bike and take part – maybe they could donate £1 for each mile."

The UK-wide week-long event, which starts this Sunday, involves people doing activities based around the numbers 2.6 or 26 to fundraise.

The date – April 26 – marks the original date of the 40th London Marathon which raised £66.4 million for charities last year.

The event has since been postponed to October 4 because of coronavirus.
