But workers at Springfield House Care Home in Codsall arranged for John and Patricia Donson to video call so they could still see each other on their anniversary on Monday.

Mr Donson usually visits his wife, who has dementia, in the care home daily and they have lunch and spend the afternoon together, but since the care home closed due to the pandemic the couple have been unable to spend time together.

Activities coordinator Laura Murphy said: "John comes in to visit every day and normally he stays with her for lunch and they go and sit in the conservatory together after, and if it's nice we open the door and they listen to classical music.

More Covid-19 coverage:

"But since all this we've been closed to visitors so he hasn't been able to come.

"John struggles with technology but we were able to do a video call so they could open cards together.

"It was quite sad that after 67 years together they weren't going to spend their anniversary together but we made sure they could talk.

"John was really pleased that we could do that. When Pat heard John's voice she started smiling.

"John sent Pat a card and we made one and had it delivered to John."
