Persimmon Homes West Midlands is the latest company to pitch in with help for hospitals as they deal with an influx of cases.

Staff at the building firm have gathered all of the spare personal protection equipment that is normally used on building sites and handed it over to be utilised by doctors and nurses on the frontline as the battle against Covid-19 intensifies.

Equipment has so far been donated to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton and the company is also making donations to other NHS trusts across the country.

The NHS is in desperate need of all safety gear due to a global shortage, forcing some hospitals nationwide to try and source equipment independently to keep employees safe from infection.

Stephen Cleveley, managing director of Persimmon Homes West Midlands, which has its main office in Wolverhampton, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to step up and donate this much-needed equipment.

“Our NHS is doing a tremendous job in this fight against coronavirus. We all appreciate the work the doctors and nurses are doing to look after people in need and we’re pleased that we can help in this small way. They deserve to be as protected as possible.”

Persimmon has taken the decision to commence an ‘orderly closedown’ of building work and temporarily close its sales offices across the country.

Its donation is one of many made by companies across the region.

Other firms are using their expertise to help provide safety equipment.

JCB and Ricoh are among those using their production lines to help in the effort to produce enough ventilators for people in intensive care. JLR has also offered its services to the national effort.

One gin distillery in Shropshire has even turned its hand to producing hand sanitiser, using its equipment to create 70 per cent proof bottles that are effective in killing off the coronavirus.

Stonehouse Brewery and Hencote Distillery, based near Oswestry, have temporarily ceased production of their products and are using their spare capacity to produce the sanitiser, which are being delivered to key workers.
