Dentist who 'woke up and couldn't breathe' has life saved thanks to heart transplant
A dentist has thanked the people who saved his life after undergoing a life-saving heart transplant.
On the night of April 2, dental practice owner Deljit Singh-Terpot was lying in bed when he started experiencing breathing difficulties.
Deljit, 54, from Smethwick, had been diagnosed with heart failure in 2007 and had several follow-up checks over a 15-year period.
However, following a period of intense illness and difficulty breathing, the dentist was taken to hospital where he was re-diagnosed with heart failure and a regurgitated aortic valve.
Mr Singh-Terpot, who owns S M Bentley Dental Practice on Hamstead Road, said: "I was diagnosed with heart failure in 2007, I was taken to Sandwell Hospital for a couple of days and was discharged within two days. I had follow-ups in Sandwell for about 15 years. I woke up and I found out I couldn't breathe.
"I ignored previous and brushed them off, I was taken to Sandwell Hospital initially, where they re-diagnosed me with heart failure."
Deljit was later diagnosed with a regurgitated aortic valve – a condition that sadly led to his brother's death in 2013.
