Hospital payout for Bilston couple calling for lessons to be learned after daughter was stillborn
A Bilston couple who have won a payout from the NHS are calling for lessons to be learned after their daughter was stillborn.
Emily Hart and Liam Ingram, who were living in Reading at the time, attended Royal Berkshire Hospital in July 2021 concerned about reduced movement of their baby and Emily – who was 39 weeks pregnant – complaining of some pain.
After the death of their baby just days later, the couple instructed expert medical negligence lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate their care under Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust and they have since secured an undisclosed settlement.
The law firm said that, following heart rate monitor tests and an examination, the couple were sent home just over six hours later on July 21, 2021, despite Liam pleading three times for Emily to be induced.
They were given an early labour advice leaflet but hadn’t been seen by an obstetrician to discuss the 26-year-old being induced.
Four days later, Emily complained of stomach pains.
She was initially advised to stay at home following a telephone assessment but was admitted to hospital 12 hours later at around 11.55pm, following a second phone call.
Medics couldn’t hear the baby’s heart rate and, following scans, the couple were told in the early hours of July 26 that their baby had died.
