Miley inspires breast screening team’s charity challenge
Radiographers, nurses and other staff from a breast screening service have raised more than £1,500 through a mammoth virtual challenge.
Members of the Dudley, Wolverhampton and South West Staffordshire Breast Screening Service walked, raised the vital funds for charity.
It saw them walk, run or cycle a distance the same as London to New York – around 5,566km or 3,459 miles – for The Children's Liver Disease Foundation.
The charity was chosen after the granddaughter of team member Kay Jones, Miley, who is now 18-months old, received a liver transplant.
Jayne Burness, health inequalities lead for the service, said everybody had loved taking part – and added the idea to do it was down to Lindsay Coleman.
She said: "I'm really proud of the team – it was a good way to lose some weight and raise some money as well. I organised it and set up the Just-Giving page and the cheque we gave them was for £1,500 – but we've now raised £1,513 and potentially more will come in, hopefully.
"Everyone absolutely loved doing it and The Children's Liver Disease Foundation, like most charities, have really struggled to raise money so they were delighted – and because Miley was a recipient of a transplant, they were chuffed to have her there as well."
The team who took on the challenge was made up of radiographer, mammographers, nurses and admin staff – who all wanted to take part in the challenge.
Alison Taylor, chief executive of The Children's Liver Disease Foundation, said: "Children's Liver Disease Foundation is the only UK charity dedicated to fighting all forms of childhood liver disease and we rely on voluntary donations.
"Like many charities, we've seen our income fall significantly over the past year, with challenge events and community fundraising severely curtailed due to the pandemic. So we're delighted and very grateful to receive this donation from the NHS Dudley Group.
"It will enable us to continue providing information and support to young people and families affected by childhood liver disease at a time they really need it."
The vital NHS breast screening service is for women aged between 50 to 70 in Dudley, Wolverhampton and South West Staffordshire. For more information – and to donate – visit Dudleybsu on Facebook or visit justgiving.com/fundraising/breast-foot-forward-russells-hall-hospital
