Grieving mother’s special thank you to Wolverhampton hospital staff
Staff at an NHS neonatal unit have been treated to 100 care packages from a mother whose son was treated there.
Pamela Harvey donated the care packages, which contain tissues, deodorant, sweets, lollipops and other treats, to staff at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust’s Neonatal Unit.
She also donated hampers full of essentials and goodies, one for staff and one for cleaners on the unit.
She said: "I wanted to do something for the staff who are working so hard and do such a brilliant job."
The 43-year-old from Hednesford lost her son Louis last September after he was born prematurely after 25 weeks and suffered a series of serious illnesses before dying at just 52 days old.
Louis was treated by staff at the neonatal unit and Pamela has since dedicated herself to raising funds for the unit and staff to thank them for everything they did for Louis during his short life.
After starting a Facebook page called "Because of Louis", Pamela has begun fundraising to buy an incubator for the neonatal unit, a target of £30,000.
Donations have now reached £2,000, raised from the sale of wristbands declaring #BECAUSEOFLOUIS, street bingo and the money from wellwishers who would have bought flowers at Louis’s funeral.
Precious
Pamela said the aim of 'Because of Louis' was to help improve babies’ lives as much as possible, on behalf of Louis, and to eventually provide valuable equipment which helps babies feel more comfortable.
She said: "We hope this equipment will prove valuable to the ward, as well as the parents, but most importantly for other precious babies."
Nikki Farrington, specialist nurse in bereavement and family support said Pamela was an extraordinarily brave and kind lady.
She said: "She has faced the darkest times a parent can imagine, yet she has found light during that time in helping others.
"The Because of Louis movement not only helps to support the Neonatal Unit and is helping us achieve great things, but it also shows many other bereaved parents that they are not alone."
