St John’s Medical Centre, in High Street, Walsall Wood, will feature a new two-storey extension to the front of the existing building along with other alterations.

This will provide more clinical space, additional admin area and increase the size of the waiting room, as well as create extra parking spaces.

The existing building was constructed in the late 1990s with a single storey extension carried out in 2009.

It is based on a busy street with businesses and residents living nearby and developers say the extension will complement neighbouring properties as well as the existing centre.

In the application, agents BRP Architects said: “The proposal is for a new two storey extension linking to the existing Waiting Room to provide additional clinical space on the ground floor and administration space on the first floor.

“The link extension will create the additional seating space for the waiting room.

“In addition to the extension, the external works will be adjusted to accommodate the extension along with the crating of five new parking spaces accessed by the carriageway between the front and rear car parks.”

Chris Berry, interim head of planning at Walsall Council, said: “Walsall Council seeks to work proactively with owners, developers and their agents in the public interest to promote sustainable developments in the borough.

“The National Planning Policy Framework encourages pre-application discussion in all formats to help ensure that proposed developments are delivered in the most appropriate way that creates economic growth, suitable housing and other forms of development so long as they safeguard the natural and built environment, highway safety and the amenity of citizens.

“In this instance the council has been able to support the proposed development and has worked with the applicant.”
