Completion of New Cross Hospital's £1m A&E extension late
The £1.5 million extension of New Cross Hospital's under-pressure A&E department has been delayed until November, it can be revealed today.
The revamp will add nine new beds to the overflowing department and was initially earmarked for completion in September.
However due to the 'complex' nature of the build hospital bosses say it won't be ready this summer.
But despite the delay and the fact a brand new £25m A&E four times as big as the current one is being built in 2015, hospital bosses are pressing ahead with the £1.5m extension of the existing department.
It comes following record patient numbers at the department, including 365 in one single day in April.
The hospital and Walsall Manor will both come under extra pressure if a recommended £70m downgrade of Stafford and Cannock Chase hospitals is approved. That would see patients needing emergency treatment sent to those hospitals instead of Stafford.
