Perton nursing home shuts after damning reports

A failing care home in South Staffordshire has shut down and its residents moved to other sites.

Hampton Court Nursing Home in Perton was the subject of several damning reports from health watchdogs.

Five were submitted within seven months last year. Action was taken by the Care Quality Commission, which cancelled the home's registration, and home bosses did not appeal against the decision. In October it was banned from taking on new residents and had its funding suspended.

During site visits between May and November, inspectors found that residents were being left feeling lonely, frustrated and without activities to keep them occupied.

Emergency cords being tied out of patients' reach and potentially faulty fire alarms were among failings highlighted by the health watchdogs.

It was also described as "very understaffed", and one patient assessed as being at risk of malnutrition was potentially given no food or drink for 12 hours.

People were being left in bed all day, and intended improvements at the home were "ineffective, inconsistent and conflicting" while inspectors also judged that residents were not being fully protected from the risk of abuse.

The CQC confirmed that the privately run home, in Wrottesley Park Road, was caring for more than 30 residents while inspections were taking place last summer. All residents have been relocated.

A spokesman said: "CQC took action to cancel the service's registration and no appeal was received with regard to this by the deadline of January 2, 2013."
