80 further norovirus outbreaks in region

Another 80 outbreaks of winter vomiting bug norovirus have been reported in the West Midlands and South Staffordshire over the past fortnight.

The number of cases of the bug has risen compared to the start of December with people reporting being ill at schools, hospitals and nursing homes.

It comes as figures from the Health Protection Agency show that nationally there have been 3,538 cases of norovirus between July and the start of December – 83 per cent higher than the previous year.

Latest figures show there have been 10 outbreaks of the bug in Dudley in the two weeks leading up to December 28, while six have been reported in both Sandwell and Wolverhampton, five in Walsall and one in the South Staffordshire area.
