The Health Protection Agency today confirmed it had received reports of swimmers becoming ill after using the pool at Wolverhampton Swimming and Fitness Centre in Wednesfield.

A statement published on the website of the Planetary Road leisure centre reads: "Due to a technical issue, we regret to inform you that our leisure waters and main pool will be closed until further notice."

A number of people who regularly use the pool claim to have fallen ill. One parent from Wednesfield is among those who have made a complaint. She said her 12-year-old daughter had been ill for the past two weeks with symptoms including sickness and diarrhoea.

She said doctors had told her she had picked up a waterborne parasite known as cryptosporidium.

"I know of at least seven other people at the pool who have fallen ill," she said. "My daughter has still not returned to school."

DC Leisure, which runs the operation, was not available to comment.
